How can you tell your house is short on insulation?
Upstairs never cools off
If the bedrooms upstairs stay hot long after the AC kicks on, the attic above them is usually thin, leaky or both. The longer it goes, the harder your system runs to keep up, and you pay for that on every power bill.
The room over the garage
That room has a garage under it and an attic over it, so it's often the first place gaps and missing insulation show up. Left alone, it turns into the room nobody wants to use half the year.
Flat, dirty or stained insulation
Insulation that's packed down, dark in spots or marked with droppings usually means an old leak, air moving through it or animals living in it. If new material goes right on top, the problem stays underneath and keeps working on your framing.
Do you actually need more insulation in your Norman home?
Home insulation in Norman, OK means bringing your attic, walls and crawl space up to a level that keeps heat where you want it, and at Insulcraft Norman Spray Foam Insulation it starts with checking what you already have. Most jobs come down to sealing the gaps first and then adding material where it's thin, and sometimes the honest answer is that you already have enough.
Most people call because one part of the house never feels right or the bill keeps climbing, and they want to know if insulation is the fix. The price moves with the size of the attic, what's already up there and whether some of it has to come out, how many gaps need sealing and which material fits your house. The schedule usually turns on anything that has to be repaired before we start and on what the city wants for your job. When I come out, I write all of that up so you have your own number, and if drafts are the main trouble, our attic air sealing work may be most of the answer.
Details to note before an estimate
- Age and rough size of the house
- Inches already in the attic
- Rooms that run hot or cold
- Stains, leaks or droppings you've seen
How we do home insulation in Norman
A lot of calls start with someone wondering if they need more at all, so I check first and tell you straight if what you have is already enough. When it isn't, we deal with whatever has to come first, because fresh insulation over a soaked or dirty layer just hides the problem. Then we do the air sealing, closing the gaps around lights, pipes, wires and the attic hatch, because insulation with air blowing through it works about as well as a sweater in the wind. We keep the vents at the eaves open so the attic can still breathe, and we blow in loose fill through a hose to an even depth that runs as full at the edges as in the middle, since the edges sit over your outside walls. If your ductwork lives in the attic, spray foam can be worth its higher cost because it seals and insulates at once, but for most attics, sealing the gaps and topping up loose fill gets you there for less.
Insulation in one spot doesn't help much when the trouble is somewhere else. If what's in your attic is wet, matted or full of droppings, we start with insulation removal so the new layer goes onto clean framing. Cold floors usually point under the house, and that's where crawl space insulation comes in.
Work that often goes with it
Insulation removal
When a roof leak soaked the old layer or animals moved in, clearing it out is the only way to know the attic is sound underneath.
Crawl space insulation
If your floors feel cold and the attic checks out fine, the comfort you're missing is usually under the house.
What happens after you call about insulation in Norman?
Call or send a message
Tell us what you've noticed, like a hot bedroom or a bill that keeps creeping up, and we'll set a time for me to come out. Landlords and property managers set up a visit the same way.
I walk the attic myself
I go through the attic or crawl space, take photos and show you what I find before I suggest any work. You get it written up, so you can see what's driving the number and compare it with anyone else's.
Our crew does the work
A crew I've trained fixes whatever has to come first, seals the gaps and then puts in the insulation. The order matters, so we don't skip ahead.
I check it before we're done
I go back up and check the finished work against what we agreed on before we call it done. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.
Questions before you book home insulation
How do I tell if my attic needs more insulation?
Look across the attic floor, and if the insulation sits level with or below the joists so you can easily see them, national ENERGY STAR guidance says you should add more. If the joists are buried well under it, you probably have enough, and adding more may not pay for itself. That same guidance puts most attics at about 10 to 14 inches, depending on the material.
What is the best blown-in insulation for an attic, cellulose or fiberglass?
Neither wins in every attic, because cellulose covers better and fiberglass settles less. Blown cellulose packs more R-value, the measure of how well insulation slows heat, into each inch, flows better around wires and framing and stops some air on its own, while blown fiberglass holds its depth better over the years. I'll tell you which one fits your attic once I've seen it.
What has to be fixed before insulating an attic?
A leaking roof, live knob and tube wiring and vermiculite insulation all have to be dealt with before new insulation goes in, according to the Department of Energy's attic guide, and bathroom fans that vent into the attic and unvented gas fireplaces are on the same list. Knob and tube is the old wiring run on porcelain knobs. Vermiculite is light, pea-size, flaky gray fill that may contain asbestos, so ENERGY STAR advises leaving it alone until an approved lab tests it, and your local health department can name one.
How much does attic insulation cost in Norman, OK?
Attic insulation in the Oklahoma City area usually costs about $1,300 to $4,400 per job. That's the going rate around here, not our quote, and where your house lands depends on attic size, what has to come out, how much sealing it needs and the material. After I walk your attic, you get your own number in writing.
Do I need a permit to insulate my house in Norman, OK?
The city's online permit list doesn't name insulation, so we check with Norman before any work starts, and if your job calls for a permit we pull it or walk you through getting one. Residential building permit applications and the city's contractor licensing information are both on Norman's Development Services page. The state Construction Industries Board doesn't currently license general contractors, though work in a licensed trade still needs that license, and we're licensed and insured.
Can insulation go over recessed lights?
IC-rated recessed lights, the kind built to sit in insulation, can generally be covered, subject to local code. Other fixtures need room around them or an approved airtight cover. If you don't know which kind your ceiling has, ask, and I'll look from the attic side during the visit.
